Sunkist Growers — over 130 years of California citrus

The Sunkist story is first the story of a revolutionary agricultural cooperative. In 1893, the citrus growers of Southern California joined forces to face the competition and the middlemen absorbing their margins. They created the Southern California Fruit Exchange — which would become Sunkist Growers in 1952. This cooperative model was then unique in American agriculture: farmers join forces, pool marketing and distribution costs, and share the profits.

The name "Sunkist" — "kissed by the sun" — was adopted in 1908 and became one of the first fresh-fruit brands in American history. Before Sunkist, oranges had no brand. Sunkist invented the concept of branded fruit! Today, Sunkist Growers is still a farmer cooperative, with strict quality programs that guarantee every Sunkist fruit has reached an optimal level of ripeness and sweetness before being harvested.
