MoonPie: the American snack that's "as big as the moon" since 1917!

A Kentucky miner asked for a snack "as big as the moon" — and that's how the MoonPie was born! Two round graham cracker biscuits, a generous layer of melty marshmallow in between, all coated in a layer of chocolate (or vanilla, banana, salted caramel). Since 1917, it's the cult snack of the American South. At My American Market, we bring it to you straight from Chattanooga, Tennessee!

Did you know the MoonPie was born on the porch of a Kentucky general store?

In 1917, a sales rep for the Chattanooga Bakery was making his usual rounds through the rural American South. At a Kentucky general store, he stepped out onto the porch and struck up a conversation with a group of coal miners. He asked them what kind of snack they'd like — something filling, cheap, easy to take down the mine. One miner answered: "something with graham crackers and marshmallow in between, and make it as big as the moon." The rep looked up at the moon and traced a circle with his thumbs and index fingers. The MoonPie was born.

The Chattanooga Bakery got to work and created the product: two round graham cracker biscuits, marshmallow in the middle, all dipped in chocolate. Five cents apiece — the Southern "working man's lunch"! The Chattanooga Bakery eventually stopped all its other products to focus solely on the MoonPie. Tradition has it that you eat it with an RC Cola — the ultimate Southern combo!

Today, the Chattanooga Bakery produces millions of MoonPies a year from its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee — a private family company that has never left the town where it all began.

The MoonPies to devour

  • MoonPie Chocolate — the original since 1917! Graham cracker, marshmallow and chocolate coating. The recipe that has barely changed in over a century. A real killer!
  • MoonPie Vanilla — the soft, creamy vanilla version. The vanilla coating brings a lighter, subtler touch. Perfect for those who prefer less chocolate!
  • MoonPie Banana — banana and marshmallow in a MoonPie. The fruity, sweet combination that's a hit in the American South!
  • MoonPie Salted Caramel — salted caramel and marshmallow. The modern twist on the classic MoonPie — the sweet-and-salty that wins everyone over!

Frequently asked questions about MoonPie

What European snack is it close to?

Imagine a Wagon Wheel, but much bigger, with more marshmallow and a thicker, lightly caramelized graham cracker biscuit. The texture is unique — the biscuit crunches slightly, the marshmallow is melty, the coating is soft. Really in a category of its own!

Can you eat a MoonPie any time?

Absolutely! At breakfast, as an afternoon snack, for dessert, as a road-trip snack — the MoonPie fits everything. Southern Americans have eaten it at all hours since 1917. Some even microwave it for a few seconds to melt the marshmallow more. Try to believe!
