7UP: the American lemon-lime soda
7UP is the lemon-lime soda that's been fizzing away since 1929. A simple, clean lemon-lime taste, ice-cold and caffeine-free, with that signature clear look. In the US it's a true classic, sipped through a straw at the movies and poured as a cocktail base alike (your virgin mojito will thank you). Back in the seventies, its iconic ad campaign even crowned it "The Uncola" — the anti-cola, the one that owns being different. Here you'll find real American 7UP and its variations — Cherry, sugar-free, special editions — imported straight from the States.
MoreWhere does 7UP come from?
There's a slightly crazy story behind that green can. Back in 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri, a man named Charles Leiper Grigg came up with his lemon-lime soda recipe. One small problem: the name he first gave it was an absolute mouthful — "Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda." The "lithiated" part referred to lithium citrate in the original formula (removed in 1948, don't worry). The drink hit shelves just two weeks before the Wall Street crash. Talk about timing.
Grigg eventually shortened that endless name into something punchy: 7UP. Why "7" and why "Up"? Nobody really knows — he took the secret to his grave, and the theories haven't stopped since.
What does 7UP taste like?
A clean, thirst-quenching lemon-lime taste, nicely fizzy and caffeine-free. No color, no fuss: just bubbles and lime. That's exactly what made it a bar classic too — topped with syrup, in a mocktail or over ice on a summer evening, it always does the job.
