Did you know Sprite was born in Germany before conquering America?

The Sprite story begins in 1959 in West Germany, under the name "Fanta Klare Zitrone" (Fanta Clear Lemon) — a drink developed by Coca-Cola to meet the demand for a lemon soda. In 1961, Coca-Cola decided to launch it in the US under a new name: Sprite. The name comes from an old Coca-Cola mascot character of the 50s — Sprite Boy, the little elf who accompanied Santa Claus in the Coca ads of the time.

The mission? To rival 7UP, which dominated the lemon-lime soda market. Sprite succeeded so well that it overtook 7UP and became the best-selling lemon-lime soda in the world. In the 90s, the slogan "Obey Your Thirst" and the partnerships with hip-hop culture made Sprite much more than a soda — a cultural icon for a whole generation. LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Drake, Nas... Sprite built itself on American basketball and rap culture like no one else.
