Slap Ya Mama: "So good it'll make you wanna slap your mama!" — the cajun spices from Louisiana since 1996!

In Louisiana, "slap your mama" isn't an insult — it's the highest compliment you can pay a cook. It means: "It's so good it would make you slap your mama for not cooking like this before!" And that's exactly why TW and Mama Jen Walker chose this name for their cajun spice blend in 1996 in Ville Platte, Louisiana. My American Market imports them to you straight from the bayou!

The most touching story in American spices

In 1996, Anthony "TW" Walker and his wife Jennifer ran a grocery store with a 24/7 deli in Ville Platte — the seat of Evangeline Parish in Louisiana, in the heart of cajun country. Mama Jen found the market's cajun spice blend too salty for her customers. She decided to create her own with TW — a blend of salt, red pepper, black pepper and garlic, balanced and tasty. Their sons Jack and Joe helped by mixing the spices in a pickle jar that they rolled across the carpet.

Customers loved the blend so much they wanted to buy it. They needed a name. TW hesitated — as a lawyer, he feared the name "Slap Ya Mama" might shock. But Mama Jen insisted: that name is the one that catches on, that name captures exactly the quality of the product. They got the approval of TW's mother — Wilda Marie Fontenot Walker — and printed her story on every product. Their first launch at the Ville Platte Smoked Meat Festival: 200 cases ordered, all sold. A cajun legend was born!

What is cajun cooking — and why have it in your kitchen?

Cajun cooking is the cuisine of the French-speaking Acadians exiled from Nova Scotia who settled in the Louisiana bayous in the 18th century. A blend of French, African and Native American traditions, it's a generous, spicy, fragrant cuisine, built around pepper, garlic, chili, aromatic herbs and Gulf of Mexico seafood. The iconic dishes — gumbo, jambalaya, étouffée, fried catfish, red beans & rice — are among the tastiest in all of America. And Slap Ya Mama is the seasoning that lets you recreate them at home, anywhere in the world!

The Slap Ya Mama range at MYAM

The Seasonings:

  • Original Blend (113g and 227g) — the classic! Salt, red pepper, black pepper and garlic. The basic cajun blend, balanced and versatile. On everything — meats, fish, vegetables, eggs, fries, popcorn.
  • White Pepper Blend (227g) — for those who want more character! White pepper replaces black pepper for a softer, more aromatic heat. Perfect for seafood and white sauces.
  • Hot Blend (113g and 227g) — for lovers of heat! More cayenne pepper for an intense warmth that builds gradually. For spicy fried chicken, chicken wings and all dishes that deserve more fire!
  • Low Sodium Blend (170g) — less salt, just as much flavor! For those watching their sodium intake without sacrificing authentic cajun taste.

The Sauces:

  • Cajun Pepper Sauce — the cajun hot sauce made with peppers, vinegar and spices. To put on absolutely everything!
  • Cajun Hot Sauce — more intense than the Pepper Sauce, for true heat lovers.
  • Jalapeño Pepper Sauce — the fresh, spicy jalapeño flavor, with the herbaceous notes characteristic of green pepper.
  • Wing Sauce Buffalo — the American buffalo sauce for chicken wings. Tangy, buttery, lightly spicy — the reference of the American game day!

The Mix:

  • Cajun Jambalaya Mix — the all-in-one mix to prepare authentic Louisiana jambalaya in minutes! Jambalaya is the cajun dish par excellence — a spicy rice with andouille sausage, shrimp and cajun spices. With the Slap Ya Mama Jambalaya Mix, no need to hunt down all the ingredients separately. Louisiana in a box!

The Slap Ya Mama range goes well beyond — Signature Blends (Garlic Salt, Blackened Seasoning, Steakhouse, Taco & Fajita, Chili Lime), Dinner Mixes (Étouffée, Gumbo, Red Beans & Rice), Cajun Fish Fry, Bloody Mary Mix, Kiss Ya Mama Cinnamon Sugar... So many references that could join MYAM soon!
