Did you know Mike and Ike almost split up for good?

In 2012, Just Born launched one of the boldest marketing campaigns in the history of American confectionery: Mike and Ike officially "broke up" over "creative differences"! The packs appeared in stores with one of the two names crossed out depending on the box — some with "Mike" struck through, others with "Ike" struck through. Mike left to pursue his music career, Ike got into art. America was in shock!

Of course, it was pure, brilliant marketing — Just Born kept making the candies. A year later, Mike and Ike "reconciled" in a big official reunion. The campaign was a masterstroke: sales exploded and a whole new generation discovered the brand. The rumor is true: Mike and Ike have fans as passionate as if they were a real duo!

Mike and Ike has been made by Just Born since 1940 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Same family as Hot Tamales! The origin of the name? Total mystery — even Just Born doesn't really know. Theories range from a 1920s vaudeville act to an internal contest, to President Eisenhower's nickname ("Ike"). We prefer to keep the mystery!
