Annabelle's: the American candy bars born on the streets of San Francisco!
Before he ever had a shop, Sam Altshuler sold his creations from a pushcart on the streets of San Francisco. A Russian immigrant, he tinkered with recipes from 1918 until he nailed the perfect formula for his Rocky Road bar. In 1950 he officially founded the Annabelle Candy Company in San Francisco, naming it after his daughter Annabelle. Today a cult West Coast nostalgia brand, Annabelle's drops you straight into the Californian candy shops of the 1950s!
MoreDid you know Annabelle's almost disappeared in 2024?
In 2024, the historic Hayward, California factory — opened back in 1965 by Sam Altshuler himself — announced it was closing. Fans panicked on social media, triggering a wave of massive orders. Good news: Promise Confections, the parent company, confirmed production would carry on. Annabelle's bars are alive and well — and now even more precious to their fans! A family brand spanning 3 generations, with a recipe that's stayed almost identical since day one.
The Annabelle's range
Annabelle's is five iconic bars, each with its own personality:
- Rocky Road — the absolute star, the reason the brand exists! Homemade marshmallows, roasted cashews and creamy chocolate. A one-of-a-kind texture — soft, crunchy and melty all at once. The bar that started it all back in 1918!
- Big Hunk — a white honey nougat, nice and chewy, packed with whole roasted peanuts. Simple, generous, addictive. Pro tip: zap it in the microwave for a few seconds to make it even gooier!
- Abba-Zaba — a peanut-butter taffy bar (soft, chewy candy) wrapped in white. That peanut butter + white sugar combo always surprises the newbies!
- U-NO — a chocolate-truffle-style bar with almond bits, wrapped in its signature silver paper. The most elegant and richest of the lineup!
- Look! — caramel, peanuts and a chocolate coating. Annabelle's take on the all-American caramel-peanut bar!
How to enjoy Annabelle's bars
Plain, at room temperature — but the real fans have their tricks. The Rocky Road warmed slightly in the microwave (10 seconds) so the marshmallow goes gooey. The Big Hunk frozen for a firmer, crunchier bite — or warmed for ultra-melty nougat. The Abba-Zaba at room temperature to enjoy that contrast of textures. And the U-NO straight from the fridge for the perfect truffle texture!
