In 1868, Edmund McIlhenny, a former New Orleans banker ruined by the Civil War, grew his first tabasco peppers on Avery Island — a 2,200-acre island sitting on a natural salt dome 8 miles deep in Louisiana. In 1869, he sent 658 bottles at one dollar each to Gulf Coast grocers. The bottles? Recycled cologne flasks. 158 years later, Tabasco is sold in over 195 countries in 36 languages, aboard Air Force One and in Queen Elizabeth II's kitchen.
