The adventure begins in 1869 in Pittsburgh, when 25-year-old Henry John Heinz set out with a partner selling... grated horseradish, from his mother's recipe. His stroke of genius? Selling it in clear glass jars, where all his competitors used opaque bottles to hide impurities. For Heinz, showing the purity of his products was a selling point — and a real philosophy. In 1876, he launched the product that would make his name: tomato ketchup.

Heinz was always a pioneer of food quality. As early as 1904, he offered a preservative-free ketchup, at a time when that was extremely rare. He was even a fervent champion of the first major American food-safety law in 1906. That obsession with quality made Heinz the largest maker of tomato-based products in the world.

Did you know where the famous "57 Varieties" comes from?

In 1896, while riding New York's elevated train, Henry Heinz spotted an ad for "21 styles of shoes." He liked the idea: he needed a catchy slogan of the same kind. He chose "57 Varieties"... even though his brand already offered more than 60 products! Why 57? Simply because 5 was his lucky number and 7 was his wife's. The slogan has stayed on the bottles for over a century. Goes to show, marketing has its little secrets.

Did you know? Heinz ketchup went to space

Heinz always knew how to adapt. During World War II, the brand even invented a self-heating soup can to feed soldiers at the front. And in 1990, Heinz ketchup traveled all the way to the International Space Station, eaten by astronauts. Not bad for a sauce born in a Pittsburgh cellar!
