Campbell's: legendary American soups

Campbell's is the red-and-white can that's lived in American kitchen cupboards since 1869. From condensed tomato soup to Chicken Noodle and Cream of Mushroom, the brand essentially invented the concept of affordable canned soup for everyone — and Andy Warhol immortalized it in pop art in 1962. Today it keeps fueling generations of Americans, with a range that goes well beyond soup: canned goods, broths, SpaghettiOs… A whole slice of everyday American cooking, imported here for you.

Where does Campbell's come from?

In 1869, fruit merchant Joseph A. Campbell and Abraham Anderson partnered in Camden, New Jersey, to can vegetables, soups and condiments. The company existed, but it was in 1897 that it truly changed scale. John T. Dorrance, a chemist and the company president's nephew, invented the condensed soup process: by removing the water, he reduced the can's volume, weight and price. Overnight, quality soup became affordable for every American household.

A year later, in 1898, the can took on its red-and-white colors — reportedly inspired by Cornell University's football jerseys. In 1962, Andy Warhol painted his 32 Campbell's soup can canvases, placing the brand in art history. Today, more than 100 cans are still bought every second around the world.
