Welch's: born from a pastor who wanted to replace communion wine in 1869 — and invented American grape jelly!

In 1869 in Vineland, New Jersey, Dr Thomas Welch — dentist, doctor AND Methodist pastor — was scandalised by a drunk parishioner after communion. He invented a non-fermented grape juice to replace communion wine. With his wife and son, he picked 40 pounds of Concord grapes, cooked and pasteurised the juice — inventing the world's first bottled fruit juice. Churches largely refused the product. It was Prohibition (1920-1933) that made Welch's indispensable. And in 1918, Welch's created the first modern grape jelly for WWI military rations. Today a cooperative of 600 grape-growing families.
