Stubb's: BBQ sauces from a war veteran, Willie Nelson's friend, who cooked his way out of Lubbock, Texas!

Christopher B. "Stubb" Stubblefield was born in 1931 in Navasota, Texas, in a cotton-picking family. During the Korean War, he served in the US Army's last all-Black infantry regiment — wounded twice, decorated with two Purple Hearts, he became mess sergeant and learned to cook for thousands of soldiers. In 1968, he opened his restaurant in Lubbock. Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Stevie Ray Vaughan played there. Ruined by the IRS in the 1980s, he moved to Austin selling his sauce in old whiskey bottles corked with a jalapeño. Motto: "Love and Happiness." My American Market imports it for you!

The man who couldn't fight the IRS with barbecue and sauce

After being forced to close his Lubbock restaurant due to tax debts, Stubb told Texas Monthly with disarming clarity: "I got run out of Lubbock 'cause I was broke, busted, and disgusted. I can't fight the IRS with barbecue and sauce." He moved to Austin, opened a restaurant-music venue, and started selling his sauce in makeshift containers. The sauce was a hit. In 1992, he appeared on David Letterman's Late Night — instant national fame. Stubb passed away in 1995. Today owned by McCormick, inducted into the BBQ Hall of Fame.
