The story begins in Canada in the 70s with a confectioner named Frank Galatolie who created martian-shaped candies he called "Mars Men" — to ride the post-Apollo 11 space wave. The martians became kids in 1985, when the brand renamed itself "Sour Patch Kids" to capitalize on the huge success of Cabbage Patch Kids (those rag dolls that were all the rage at the time). Clever, right?
