In 1930, Frank Mars and his son Forrest created a nougat-caramel-peanut-chocolate bar. Just as they were about to launch it, their favourite horse — Snickers, raised on their "Milky Way Farm" in Tennessee — died. To honour him, the bar took his name. Did you know Snickers was called "Marathon" in Britain until 1990?

For 20 years, Britons ate "Marathon" bars — the exact same product, just under a different name. In 1990, Mars standardised the global name.
