Razzles: "First it's a candy, then it's a gum" — the two-stage American candy since 1966!
There are thousands of candies in the world. But Razzles is in a category of its own — the only category it has occupied alone since 1966. First it's a candy. Then it becomes a chewing gum. The same piece, the same bite, two successive experiences in one. It was Robert C. Bucher, a Pennsylvania chemist, who patented this revolutionary concept in 1963 — and Fleer Corporation that marketed it in 1966 under the name Razzles. Now part of Tootsie Roll Industries (the same family as Charleston Chew and Charms), Razzles is an American candy icon. My American Market imports them to you straight!
MoreThe most surprising story in American candy
In 1963, Robert C. Bucher, a chemist at Fleer Corporation in Philadelphia — the same company that made Dubble Bubble, the first bubble gum in history! — filed a patent for something never seen before: a candy that turns into chewing gum. The chemical formula is complex: the candy starts as a pressed sweet tablet, and as it dissolves in the mouth, it releases gum polymers that gradually take on the texture of chewing gum. A culinary and chemical revolution at once!
But what is this revolutionary candy called? Fleer chose "Razzles" — after an invented flavor they had created, the "Razzleberry," which never actually existed. The name stuck, the flavor didn't. And that's not the only anecdote: Razzles are the favorite candies of the main character in the film "13 Going on 30" (2004) with Jennifer Garner — an appearance that propelled the brand into global pop culture!
How does the Razzles magic work?
Place a Razzle on your tongue. At first, it's a candy — sweet, fruity, lightly tangy, with that effervescent-tablet texture you recognize immediately. After 30 to 60 seconds of chewing, the candy dissolves and... the magic happens. The texture changes. What was solid becomes soft, stretchy, chewy. You now have a chewing gum in your mouth! Not as stretchy as a Hubba Bubba, but a real chewing gum with a persistent fruity flavor.
