The story of James Lindsay — the visionary from Philadelphia

James Lindsay grew up in Philadelphia with two passions: music and snacks. A marketing graduate from Cheyney University, he first worked in the hair-care industry for African-American communities (Johnson Products, Warner-Lambert) before realizing the same marketing techniques could revolutionize the snack aisle. In 1994, with 40,000 dollars raised from family and friends, he launched Rap Snacks. At his first meeting with a distributor, he sold 800 cases. Success was immediate.

In 2003, he signed a major deal with Universal Music Group to use the images of the label's artists on his packaging. Rap Snacks became a 7-figure business. In 2016, after a break from 2010 to 2015, he relaunched the brand with bigger formats and higher prices. Today Rap Snacks is distributed at Walmart — one of the only African-American-owned brand products on the shelves of the world's largest retailer.
