The Swiss story that conquered America

In 1962, Margaret Rudkin, founder of Pepperidge Farm, was traveling in Europe. At Kambly, a Swiss biscuit maker, she discovered little fish-shaped crackers. The concept won her over immediately — she negotiated the rights to produce and market them in the US. Fun fact: the original Kambly Goldfish had been created in 1958 to celebrate the founder's wife, who was a Pisces (astrological sign)! At their American launch, the 5 initial flavors were: Lightly Salted, Cheese, Barbecue, Pizza and Smoky. Cheddar — now by far the No.1 flavor — was only introduced in 1966, 4 years after launch. In 1997, the smiley face was added — and about 40% of crackers now sport that iconic smile. In 1999, Nabisco tried to copy Goldfish — Pepperidge Farm won the lawsuit!
