Fritos: the American corn chips that invented it all in 1932!
Before Doritos, before Cheetos, before all the chips you know — there were Fritos! Charles Elmer Doolin kicked it all off in 1932 in San Antonio, Texas, with a recipe bought for 100 dollars from a Mexican street vendor. Since then, these extruded corn chips, crunchy and lightly salted, have become an American institution. At My American Market, we import them straight from the States.
MoreDid you know Fritos invented the corn chip concept?
In 1932, Charles Elmer Doolin bought an extruded corn chip recipe for 100 dollars from a San Antonio street vendor. He made it in his kitchen, sold it from his vehicle and turned a two-dollar daily profit. It was the start of an extraordinary adventure! In 1945, Herman W. Lay bought the recipe to create Frito-Lay, the biggest snack company in the world. But the original Fritos recipe has barely changed since 1932. And that's a good thing!
What sets Fritos apart from all other chips is their texture: dense, thick, really crunchy. Not puffed like Cheetos, not thin like Lay's — Fritos have a character all their own. And the roasted-corn taste is unmistakable!
The Fritos you have to try
- Fritos Original — the classic corn chip, dense and crunchy with that unmistakable roasted-corn taste. The mandatory starting point!
- Fritos Scoops — shaped like a little cup, perfect for dips and sauces. Very popular in the US for apéritif!
- Fritos Twists — twisted into a spiral for an even bigger crunchy surface. The fun format of the range!
