Baker's: America's oldest chocolate maker — and the secret to German Chocolate Cake!

When people talk about American chocolate, they usually picture big supermarket bars. But Baker's is another story — the oldest story in American chocolate, starting in 1780 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. It's the first company ever to produce chocolate in the United States, long before Nestlé or Cadbury. Now part of Kraft Heinz, Baker's remains the benchmark for American baking chocolate and the secret ingredient in hundreds of classic recipes. My American Market brings it to you straight from the source!

The most mysterious story in American chocolate

In 1764, Dr. James Baker met John Hannon, an out-of-work Irish chocolate maker. Baker funded him to launch a chocolate works near the Neponset River in Dorchester. "Hannon's Best" chocolate sold for 15 years with a money-back guarantee. In 1779, Hannon set off on a trip to the West Indies... and vanished mysteriously! His wife sold her shares to Baker, who renamed the product "Baker's Chocolate" in 1780. The first American chocolate brand was born!

In 1852, an employee named Samuel German created a sweeter chocolate. It was called "German's Sweet Chocolate". In 1957, a Dallas newspaper ran a cake recipe using that chocolate and called it "German Chocolate Cake". The whole world has believed ever since that the cake is German — when in reality, German is a man's name! It's one of the funniest mix-ups in the history of American food.

Baker's Angel Flake Sweetened Coconut — the star product

Baker's Angel Flake sweetened coconut is THE American coconut, full stop. Very different from dry European desiccated coconut — Angel Flake flakes are longer, softer, moister and sweeter. They melt differently when baked and bring an incomparable soft texture.

German Chocolate Cake: the iconic American recipe! A chocolate cake topped with a caramel-coconut-pecan frosting. Baker's coconut is the essential ingredient in that legendary frosting.

Ambrosia Salad: the sweet American holiday "salad" — pineapple, mandarin oranges, whipped cream and Baker's coconut. A retro American dessert you absolutely have to try!

American macaroons: simply mix Angel Flake + sweetened condensed milk + egg white. Bake for 15 minutes. Ultra-soft coconut macaroons in 20 minutes!

Cake decoration: sprinkle over a frosted cake for a spectacular "beach cake" finish. Lightly toasted in a pan, it's even better!

The Baker's baking chocolate range

Baker's also offers a full range of baking chocolate — Unsweetened (100% cacao, for intense recipes), Bittersweet (67% cacao), Semi-Sweet (54% cacao), German's Sweet (48% cacao) and White Chocolate. These baking chocolates are very different from European eating bars — they're formulated to handle heat and deliver perfect results in baking. Coming soon to My American Market!
