Baby Ruth: the American chocolate bar you've seen in all your favourite films!
You've definitely heard of Baby Ruth! Even if not for the taste, you'll know it from Sloth in The Goonies shouting its name at the top of his lungs… Caramel, peanuts, nougat and milk chocolate: the winning combo that's made Baby Ruth one of America's most iconic candy bars since 1920. At My American Market, we import it straight from the USA.
MoreDid you know Baby Ruth has nothing to do with Babe Ruth?
This one's been causing debate for over a century! Officially, Baby Ruth was created in 1920 by the Curtiss Candy Company and named after Ruth Cleveland, the daughter of President Grover Cleveland. Except Ruth Cleveland had died back in 1904… And Babe Ruth, the legendary baseball player, was at the absolute peak of his fame in 1920. Coincidence? The rumour is true: many believe Curtiss wanted to ride the Bambino's fame without paying him royalties. Clever!
In 1990 the brand moved to Nestlé, then in 2018 Ferrara (a Ferrero subsidiary) took over — the same family as Butterfinger, by the way! But the recipe has barely changed since 1920. And long may that continue!
So what exactly is a Baby Ruth?
A Baby Ruth is a generous bar with a soft nougat centre, covered in creamy caramel and crunchy peanuts, all wrapped in milk chocolate. Rich, indulgent, and oh so satisfying. The sweet-salty combo of caramel and peanuts? A total winner — simply irresistible. If you're a fan of that combination, you're going to love it!
Baby Ruth in pop culture
Baby Ruth is way more than a chocolate bar — it's a genuine American icon! Remember Sloth in The Goonies (1985) handing a Baby Ruth to Chunk as a token of friendship? That legendary scene made the bar famous worldwide. And before that, in 1980, Caddyshack gave it an unforgettable moment in the golf club swimming pool. Baby Ruth has earned its place in the hall of fame of American snacks!
