Swedish Fish: the little gummy fish whose flavor no one can really name!

Swedish Fish — little red (and not only!) gummy fish, chewy, with a mysterious flavor no one can really identify. Cherry? Strawberry? Watermelon? Lingonberry? The mystery has stayed intact for decades. This Swedish-origin candy has become an essential American classic. At My American Market, we select the best references for you.

Did you know Swedish Fish really comes from Sweden?

In the 50s, the Swedish confectioner Malaco sought to conquer the North American market. They created a fish-shaped candy — a nod to the fishing culture of Sweden. The gummy fish landed in the US in the 60s and became a phenomenon. Today, Swedish Fish belongs to Mondelez (the same group as Sour Patch Kids) and is produced in Canada and Turkey.

In Sweden, these candies are called "pastellfiskar" (pastel fish) and have different flavors — including salmiak, a salty licorice very popular in Scandinavia. But the American version, with its mysterious taste (probably lingonberry — that little red Swedish berry) is truly in a category of its own!

One last fun fact: a Swedish Fish Oreo edition was created in 2016 — and opinions were very divided in the US. That's American candy culture!

The Swedish Fish to discover

  • Swedish Fish Mini Assorted — the mini fish in a mix of flavors and colors. Smaller, just as addictive, and even easier to snack on!
  • Swedish Fish Tails — two flavors in a single fish, half-and-half! One half classic red, one half another flavor. The "Tails" concept for the undecided!
  • Swedish Fish Blue Raspberry Lemonade — blue raspberry and lemonade in a gummy fish. The most original and exclusively American flavor in the range!
  • Swedish Fish & Friends — fish that pay tribute to endangered marine species. Sea turtle (watermelon), Amazon dolphin (strawberry)... Chewy, fruity and committed!

Frequently asked questions about Swedish Fish

What flavor exactly are Swedish Fish?

The big question! Officially, Mondelez has never confirmed the flavor. But clues on the brand's social media ("Born to be a little lingonberry fish") point to lingonberry — a small sour Swedish berry. Cherry? Raspberry? Lingonberry? It's up to you to decide!

What's the difference between Swedish Fish and classic gummies?

Swedish Fish have a slightly denser, less gelatinous texture than classic gummies. They're chewier, almost melty — that's what makes them so addictive!
