The brand was founded in 1914 in Chicago by Martin Kretchmer, and has produced Red Vines at its California plant in Union City for decades.

A little secret few people know: Red Vines Original Red Twists don't contain real licorice! It's a fruity candy shaped like licorice — Americans still call them "red licorice" out of habit. Only Red Vines Black Licorice contains licorice extract. The red color is a raspberry flavor subtly modified in 1952 to give that signature taste. "Peace, Love & Vines" — that's the brand's philosophy!
