Mug Root Beer: the creamy American root beer with the iconic bulldog!

Do you know American root beer? That soda based on sarsaparilla, vanilla and spices that has nothing to do with our European sodas — Mug Root Beer is one of the most popular in the US since 1940. Creamy, lightly vanilla, with that typically American taste of herbs and spices. And the mascot? A bulldog named Dog proudly holding a mug of foamy root beer. At My American Market, we import it straight for you!

Did you know Mug Root Beer was born during Prohibition?

In 1940 in San Francisco, the Belfast Beverage Company launched "Belfast Root Beer" — an alternative for an America that was discovering the pleasures of sodas. The brand changed its name to "Mug Old Fashioned Root Beer" in 1955, then simply "Mug." In 1986, PepsiCo bought the brand and gave it its iconic mascot: Dog the bulldog, holding a nicely foamy mug of root beer. Today Mug Root Beer belongs to Keurig Dr Pepper.

Mug Root Beer has a creamy, soft flavor, less pronounced than Barq's (also available at MYAM) — it's the great debate among American root beer fans! Team Mug for the softness and creaminess, team Barq's for the sharper, fuller side. Both deserve to be tasted!

What exactly is root beer?

Root beer is a traditional American soda whose original recipe was based on sarsaparilla root (sassafras). Today the recipe uses natural flavors that recreate that unique taste — a combination of vanilla, mild spices, herbal notes and a light caramelized sweetness. Nothing comparable to a cola or a ginger ale — it's a 100% American flavor!

Tips and ways to enjoy Mug Root Beer

The most classic way: nicely chilled, in a tall glass with ice. But the real American experience is the Root Beer Float: pour ice-cold Mug Root Beer over one or two scoops of vanilla ice cream. The foam forms instantly, the ice cream slowly melts into the soda — it's one of the most iconic dessert-drinks in America! Some also use it as a base for a cocktail or mocktail with vanilla syrup and whipped cream.
