One of my fondest memories from the University of Florida were the crazy jello shots you found at almost every party you went to, easy to make, fun to drink, and found in almost every color – of course, for us they were mostly Orange and Blue!!!!

I tried out Jello shots in France with some friends after discovering that My American Market sold Jello!!! I thought it would be fun to see what the French thought of this staple university drink from the States. The verdict : most of them liked it, but some were grossed out by jello’s texture...definitely funny to watch, I guess it takes a little getting used to.

So here’s the standard recipe for Jello Shots. You can use any liquor, I used vodka because I had Raspberry Jello, but you can get inventive and use Tequila with Lime Jello for Margarita Shots...I’m sure you get the idea.

Basic Vodka Jello Shots Recipe

Ingredients :
2 x 3oz Jello
16oz Boiling Water
6oz Cold Water
10oz Vodka

Directions :
1. Mix Jello mix with boiling water until dissolved
2. Add cold water and alcohol
3. Pour mixture into cups, careful not to spill any!
4. Put jello cups into the fridge for at least 4 hours or until it congeals.

Makes about :
18-22 2oz shots.

Hope this inspiring you to serve these entertaining treats at your next soiree!!! Check out the pics of the Jello Shot making process and our happy group!

So I started with Raspberry Jello and 2oz plastic shot cups – ideal for Jello shots since you can cover them with a lid and stack them in the fridge or transport them with ease.

Here is the boiled water, Jello mix, cold water and Vodka all mixed in the bowl. It really takes about 3 minutes to get to this point after the water is boiled.

Instructions - Picture3

I filled all the 2oz cups with the Jello mixture. Quite simple, but careful not to spill too much mix while filling the cups – it’s just less to have later.

The shots stacked perfectly in the fridge!!!

And a very content group of friends!!! Thanks for the Jello, Clark!

My American Market’s main strategy is to target people familiar with American food products. Yet, I have always been curious to present my selection to some random Frenchies. Actually, educating French people to US products and taste is, I believe, a big component of My American Market’s mission. This is why I invented the “American reFOODlution” concept. It’s a movement to fight negative stereotypes regarding US food and promote American taste and gastronomy. You might be concerned if you, like me, are tired of:

- Explaining that you love European food but American food is tasty too!

- Arguing that American food is not all junk food

- Insisting that American food is more diverse than hamburgers and fries

- Having to prove you know how to cook too!

This is a non violent fight (so put back your meat knife and rolling pin in the kitchen drawers and cabinets). The art of convincing is what makes a difference here!

Back in January, I learned about Mirande’s festival: a small town of 40,000 inhabitants in the Gers region which has been organizing a 6-day country music and line dancing festival every year since 1993. And it works! I mean this festival receives over 160,000 visitors, from country fanatics to curious locals.

So I thought this festival would just be the perfect chance to launch the American reFOODlution movement. After all, Mirande’s audience should have been a bit more open to concepts and things coming from the United States.

This is how I signed up to have a booth at the 2009 edition. I motivated a team of volunteers with my parents, sister and best friend to help me hold the booth during what would be a marathon.

A key element of our convincing strategy at Mirande was to offer some sample products. We had a wide variety of products to try such as JIF peanut butter, Fluff marshmallow spread, Aunt Jemima syrup, Goldfish, several sorts of cookies.

My parents were hilarious educating French adults’ manners. Here are the best quotes I heard from them:

→To someone not willing to try a food sample:

You are always saying to your children they should try what is in their plates before saying they dislike it. Maybe you should start applying it for yourself”

To someone trying a food sample and disliking it:

You shouldn’t say it is disgusting. Say you don’t like it.”

To someone criticizing the fattening power of American food:

And you think eating foie gras makes you fit!”

Here are the best selling products:

- Fluff: I sold them all out in 1 day!

- Atomic fire balls: “this is awful. Give me 10!” type of clients. I guess they played a lot of jokes on their friends once back home…

- Wonka nerds and Bubble Yum gums: kids loved our booth. They kept coming back to our booth and bringing their new friends along. I have to say I was positively surprised to see how polite most of them were.

- Peanut Butter jars sold pretty well. JIF extra crunchy was slightly more popular than JIF creamy. Hardly anyone wanted the reduced fat kind. How surprising…

- Soda: a lot of visitors were curious to finally have a chance to try a can of Dr Pepper or Root Beer. They’ve heard so much about those drinks through US TV series and movies.

It was a tough job. We did sell to some US lovers or curious people and even managed to broaden a few visitors’ minds. This is a start. The American reFOODlution has now officially started and this is just the beginning!!

To conclude, it was a great human adventure with my family and friends. I still cannot believe they put up with so much work and my high standards and demands. I loved every moment working by their side and I am really grateful to have such precious people in my life.

This is it! I have just launched my dream business: a service that would provide the American community and friends with staples of American food.

My American Market’s adventure all started because of a ranch dressing craving (big things can happen because of cravings so don’t rebuff them!). It is going to sound bad, but a yummy dressing makes me eat more salad. And eating salad is healthy! Well… as long as I don’t pour half the dressing bottle in my salad bowl…

Anyways, back living in France after several years in the States, I was dealing with a lot of cravings. Besides, I wanted to share with my entourage some American recipes with the right ingredients. I tried different options to get my favorite American treats and none were completely satisfying to me. Therefore I came up with this idea of a service that could satisfy most common US food cravings at anytime of the day or night. With an online grocery store, it becomes fast and convenient for anyone to be delivered right to their door, wherever that front door might be located!

But I was visualizing a business that would be more than just an “Epicerie Américaine”. It would be a place with a sense of community, the American way! I wanted to take opportunities of tools Web 2.0 brought us and create a platform with many possibilities to communicate, exchange, network, cooperate, play and have fun with other members of the American community and friends. I’d like everyone to take part in the process if they wish, so My American Market becomes everyone’s contribution.

I often hear: why on earth would you want to sell unhealthy American food when you live in a country with such sophisticated and savory cuisine? Well don’t get me wrong, I love living in France and I am not complaining about the eating part either! Yet, I really enjoy American food for several main reasons:

It reminds me of my “American home”

I like the taste of it! Nothing can beat beef jerky as a snack to me. I know some of you could go very far for a peanut butter cup. There are no substitutes here in grocery stores for cooking a decent pumpkin pie or spicing up your homemade chili.

-  I love spreading the American taste around me. It makes me feel like I am contributing to fight stereotypes or short-mindedness.

When I was trying to come up with a business to start, it became clear there were very few fields that I felt were right for me, that I would enjoy and find useful promoting. Selling American food rapidly became such a recurrent idea in my head that I had to act on it.

So I surveyed, studied, questioned, investigated and examined all aspects of the market and … decided to launch the project!

Today, the website is officially up and running. I am ready to satisfy anyone’s cravings!

This is an exciting time for me and I hope I will meet your expectations and gain your trust and loyalty.

There is one thing left to say:

Welcome to My American Market! This online store has been designed for you. Please feel right at home!
