Fanta: dive into Fanta's fascinating history
Fanta got its start in 1940, thanks to Max Keith, head of The Coca Cola Company's local operations in Germany. Due to everything that was going on in the world at the time, Germany was no longer able to import the ingredients it needed to make Coke. That is when Keith decided to create a brand new drink, using only products that were readily available in Germany during the uncertain times the country was facing.
For instance, it was easy for him to get his hands on whey, a by-product of cheese, so that went into the recipe. He also incorporated fibers and other parts of the fruit that were left over after apples were pressed to make cider. It might not sound very appetizing, but it's the true story of how Fanta was first created!
When the drink went to market, the recipe was adapted to suit the ingredients that were available in each country. Italian Fanta, for example, was created with oranges, and Dutch Fanta was made with elderberry.
After the war ended, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation stopped making Fanta for about a decade. Thankfully, it decided to bring the soda back, to provide consumers with a wider range of choice. It started producing Fanta again in Naples, Italy in 1955. And that's how Orange Fanta as we know it came to be. As you can probably imagine, it was a huge hit. And the rest is history!
Fanta hit the US market in 1960 and quickly became one of Americans' favorite soft drinks. And little by little, the rest of the world began falling for Fanta, too. In 1969, Fanta Orange became the brand's top selling drink in every country.
