They were fleeing pre-war Austria, but they brought precious know-how with them: the art of Viennese chocolate, learned at the prestigious Altmann & Kühne house in Vienna. In their Brooklyn workshop, they recreated that quality European chocolate — but with a distinctly American identity. Barton's Bonbonniere was born. Barton's owes much of its success in the 50s and 60s to a touching tradition: fundraising competitions in American Jewish schools. Classes competed to sell the most boxes of Barton's chocolates — a way to fund school activities while building loyalty from one generation to the next. Barton's chocolate became synonymous with Shabbat, Jewish holidays and family moments for millions of Americans.

Today Barton's belongs to Promise Confections and keeps making its chocolates with the same old-world recipes — a generous, creamy chocolate that calls to mind both the Viennese bonbonnieres and post-war America.
